Books for Travel is a specialist mail order bookseller. We provide bespoke lists of in-print travel books for holidays around the world covering Art and Architecture, Guides and Maps, History, Literature and Natural History. We undertake book searches for out of print books.

We are currently offering for sale: "Sand Buried Ruins Of Khotan" by Sir Aurel Stein, a popular account of his first archaeological expedition into Central Asia from 1900 to 1901. It is his most charming and exciting book which is partly a witty and entertaining travelogue, partly a journal of exceptional archaeological exploration and partly Stein’s proof to himself that his theory of the long lost Buddhist kingdoms of the Silk Road and the Serindian culture they supported was indeed correct. It is something of a detective story for it contains his own description of how he unmasked Islam Akhun, the forger of the strange documents in unknown script which had so long puzzled the academic community. It was this first journey, when the plain Mr. Aurel Stein travelled on a hunch and a small allowance from the Indian Government, and it established Stein’s reputation and allowed him to go on to discover Dun Huang.

"Sand Buried Ruins Of Khotan" was published in London in 1903 and quickly sold out. Books For Travel have now produced a facsimile of the First Edition including Stein’s own photographs and maps and bound in the famous red cover.
