"Sand Buried Ruins Of Khotan" by M.A. Stein was first published in 1903. This facsimile edition is limited to 500 copies and is priced at £135.00 and distributed by Books for Travel. Sir Aurel Stein was born in Budapest on 26 November 1862. He was a great scholar, explorer, archaeologist and geographer. He made many expeditions into Central Asia and his discoveries are recorded in his books including "Sand Buried Ruins Of Khotan", "Serindia", and "Ruins of Desert Cathay". First Editions of these books are rare and command high prices. A copy of "Sand Buried Ruins Of Khotan", sold at auction in October 1998 realised £2,900 (The Peter Hopkirk copy). Sir Aurel Stein undertook his first major Central Asian expedition in 1900. This was followed by three others in 1906, 1913 and 1930. "Sand Buried Ruins Of Khotan", is the result of his first expedition. In "Foreign Devils on the Silk Road " Peter Hopkirk writes: "Sir Aurel Stein's expeditions, which were to carry him some twenty-five thousand miles through Chinese Turkestan, have been described by another famous excavator, Sir Leonard Woolley, as ' the most daring and adventurous raid upon the ancient world that any archaeologist has attempted'". He was honoured by King George V as a Knight Commander of the Indian Empire (K.C.I.E.). Sir Aurel Stein died in Kabul, Afghanistan, on 26 October 1943.
